It's hard to like the pack they are in because everyone is so self absorbed with themselves; they do nothing to help Carol. In the end, it is Van's time, love and attention that helps Carol come to deal with her ordeal. This story at times will break your heart, but then make you smile when you realize Van is actually helping Carol through her pain.
