How frightened Philomena must have been to come across country to be a mail order bride, and then to find out Lewis only wanted a housekeeper. Although, the author did not portray Philomena in that way, here she is in the west and no prospects of a husband to protect her. So, she accepts the housekeeper position for at least some money and a safe place to stay. Fortunately, the pastor's wife has something else in mind. Lewis comes to love his housekeeper and doesn't like the fact that men are coming around and courting the pretty housekeeper. Lewis's thoughts are hilarious because there is no way any man can keep himself completely separate from his household. I like Philomena, but had trouble even liking Lewis because of his stupid thoughts. It's a good story with a typical mail order bride ending.
