This story features multiple plots targeting one couple. Hired as the school teacher from New York, our heroine arrives in town, where our hero is the local blacksmith and widower with a son. Plot one involves the town's matron and Luca's neighbor scheming to take Tommy away from him. Plot two introduces Amelia's estranged mother, who reappears after abandoning her to an orphanage and attempts to exploit her for money. Meanwhile, Henry, the town's wealthy and dissolute son, torments Luca to force the sale of his blacksmith shop. Despite the intense action, the couple finds time to fall in love. The well-developed characters rely on their faith to navigate these trials and learn that love encompasses forgiving even their worst adversaries.
