Along the way, he crosses paths with Phylis, a capable woman sea captain who finds herself falling for the wildly handsome heir. However, Phylis initially pushes him away—she has little patience for a man who refuses to appreciate his immense privilege and family blessings.
Driven by his attraction to Phylis, Michael makes a genuine effort to learn about her and adapt to life on a ship. Unsurprisingly, he is completely useless at hard physical labor, but he makes up for it with plenty of charm and an undeniable knack for pleasing a woman.
As the two naturally fall in love, it becomes clear just how good of a match they are—mostly because Michael desperately needs someone grounded to take care of him. It is a well-written, cheerful, and thoroughly enjoyable romance that makes for a great read.

Charles is a villain through and through—essentially a ruthless Gaston, but far worse—who wants to take away her son and force Penelope into becoming his mistress. Seeking safety, Penelope moves near the estate of Malcolm, the Duke of Brigrock. Malcolm is a large, heavily scarred war veteran who deliberately lives as a recluse to avoid society.
The connection begins simply when Penelope’s son repeatedly sneaks onto the Duke’s property to play with his dog. Once Malcolm discovers the dangerous blackmail Penelope faces, he steps in. He first offers to mentor the boy, but as Charles grows increasingly aggressive, Malcolm takes a bold step and proposes marriage to offer legal protection.
From there, Malcolm works hard to truly win Penelope’s heart. He does not rely on empty gestures; instead, he completely secures her love by genuinely loving and protecting her son. It is a wonderfully satisfying, emotional story with strong characters and a hero you cannot help but root for.

A thoroughly entertaining exploration of the perils and perks of matchmaking.
Our protagonist, an Earl in desperate need of a hefty dowry, has very specific standards: his future Countess must be a bluestocking or a librarian, as he cannot endure the chatter of simpering debutantes. Lacking the funds for a proper matchmaker, fate intervenes when the formidable Mrs. Dove-Lyon contacts him regarding an outstanding debt.
Upon leaving their meeting, he wanders into a local bookstore and encounters Miss Kingston. It is love at first sight for the Earl, and once he discovers his matchmaker has paired him with that very same lady, he is entirely sold. Miss Kingston is similarly captivated—right up until she discovers his title. Her father, meanwhile, is simply delighted to have her off his hands and out of the house.
The characters feel fresh and play their roles admirably well. A charming, witty read where a good time is had by all—including this reader.

The Duke's Bargain A Debut Novel by I Benott

Worth the Slow Burn

This story revolves around a Duke who strikes a high-stakes bargain with a village orphan: £20,000 for a marriage of convenience and a proper heir. Unfortunately, Malcolm feels an inexplicable urge to court his wife before actually fulfilling the rest of their arrangement.

His nineteen-year-old bride, Eliza, is revealed to be the daughter of Lady Alice Harper—though how that fits into the broader plot is left entirely up in the air. The mysterious necklace Malcolm aggressively rips off her neck meets a similar fate, abandoned without a satisfying resolution.

Where the book truly shines, however, is in the quiet shift of their relationship. Eliza slowly integrates herself into his home and his heart, never pushing or demanding, but simply remaining present. It adds a lovely sweetness to the narrative and delivers a genuinely delightful slow burn.

A romantic, beautifully written tale of growth and second chances. Daphne is an absolute joy, and watching Dominic and Fiona overcome their biases makes for a wonderfully gratifying read.

The Laird who Tamed her (Lairds of Ruin Book 2) by Serenity Whyte

Had potential, but the story lacks continuity
Great characters and a striking cover cannot save a plot that constantly loses its footing.
The terms of the main arrangement shift continually. First the couple plans to marry, then they do not. He integrates her into his clan and lets her grow close to his daughter, only to promise to help her escape before the handfasting while sharing a narrow bed at an inn. Next, he rides back to that same inn, suddenly realizes he loves her, and charges straight into the climax and the villain reveal.
Bea’s father makes a thoroughly dislikeable character, but the narrative fails to maintain its own logic. Had the author kept a clean continuity around the arranged marriage, this would have been a strong story. Instead, the plot fails to hold up under the confusion.

LADY SLIGHT AND THE VISITOR TREACHEROUS TREASURES BOOK ONE by C. N. JARRETT

Beneath the clever banter and sharp bargaining lies a sweet, warm-hearted story about forgiveness, redemption, and the comforting truth that our past blunders don't have to define our future. It’s a charming tale that leaves you believing some mistakes really can be corrected

Unfinished Business
The narrative is dry and emotionally distant, leaving me feeling completely detached from the characters—like observing ants on an anthill, watching their daily movements without ever truly understanding or connecting with them. To make matters worse, the story ends on a cliffhanger. I thoroughly dislike this tactic in a series because it leaves a book feeling incomplete, and it feels particularly egregious here as the story cuts off right while we are waiting for a critical answer.
We are promised an impending storm, and we watch the characters prepare for its arrival, only for them to discover they are not nearly as ready as they believed. On the spiritual side, the evangelism felt forced at times, though I appreciated that each character ultimately came to salvation on their own. While the scripture included was a nice touch, it lacked the weight needed to truly inspire a change of heart. Drawing more heavily from Revelation and Isaiah would have conveyed the message with the power and depth it desperately needed.

Captured by the Japanese, Tom becomes the sole survivor after the cargo ship holding the captives is blown up. The Navy eventually rescues him from an island where he was nursed back to health, but they promptly tuck him away in psych wards because he keeps insisting he is a dead man—having lost his dog tags during the conflict.

Enter Connie, his nurse for a year, who decides to actually help him. She reaches out to Jack, who travels to California and instantly recognizes Tom from their time on the USS Yorker. The road back home is packed with adventure, miracles, constant prayer, and life-changing decisions. While the Navy eventually redeems itself in the end, they never do quite explain why they tried to hide him in the first place.

The real heart of the book lies in the growth of the characters. Smitty shows remarkable devotion to his new wife, standing in stark contrast to the angry man we first met on the ship. Meanwhile, Jack struggles with his own healing war injuries, yet his faith and determination to get Tom home are indomitable.

Obedience to the hard choices in life is deeply rewarded, especially when you walk the extra mile for someone else. Jack’s journey is a powerful reminder of that truth, mirroring the real-life grace that comes from stepping up when it matters most.

Jack is still navigating the nuances of his new Christian faith, needing the occasional nudge from Dorrie to keep his compass pointed north. Set against the crisp backdrop of 1943, I started the book with a few firm assumptions about who these people were—and while I wasn't entirely wrong about some, the author delighted in proving me wrong with others.

Smitty surprised me the most. Yet, looking at my own walk of faith, it is usually the least likely, rough-around-the-edges figures who end up teaching us the deepest lessons. The author excels at breathing life into every backstory, ensuring each character carries a meaningful takeaway for the reader.

My heart aches most for Loretta. Of everyone in this WWII-era tale, she feels the emptiest—so consumed with marketing her own surface beauty that she misses the very essence of living.

The true turning point comes when Dorrie, Drew Brackman's grieving fiancée, visits Jack in the hospital to deliver a gift Drew intended for him. It is through Dorrie's quiet grace that Jack finally understands and accepts "the ticket" Drew spent so much time explaining. It serves as a sharp, poignant reminder: God meets us precisely where we are—no matter the place, the time, or the state of our hearts.
