Charlotte is a heroine after my own heart—sharp-tongued, wonderfully unfiltered, and entirely incapable of suffering fools. Her fierce loyalty to her family is as admirable as her guilt is heartbreaking when she keeps their precarious situation hidden from Edward, the Duke of Ravenmoor.
Edward, bless his heart, only agrees to an arranged marriage because his overbearing mother takes the liberty of posting the announcement herself. Yet, once Charlotte enters his orbit, the poor man hasn't a prayer; she settles into his mind and simply refuses to leave.
Naturally, the ton is never short on delusion, which brings us to George and Constance. Why scheming villains operating on a shared, dreadful logic assume that sabotaging a blossoming romance will magically drive a heart into their waiting arms remains one of life’s great mysteries. Neither was chosen before Charlotte and Edward met, yet both cling to the tragic hope that destruction equals affection.
The narrative is beautifully crafted, but where it truly shines is in the quiet, revelatory moments between the lead pair. The author captures their developing affection with remarkable nuance, reminding us of a poignant truth: love isn’t just a fleeting feeling—it is a conscious choice that must be made every single day.
