“Your dead friend wants his life back!” is certainly one way to grab a reader's attention, and this story wastes no time doing just that.

Taking us from New Jersey to California and back, the plot centers on Tom Peterson, who was listed as KIA after Azure Verde. Captured by the Japanese, Tom becomes the sole survivor after the cargo ship holding the captives is blown up. The Navy eventually rescues him from an island where he was nursed back to health, but they promptly tuck him away in psych wards because he keeps insisting he is a dead man—having lost his dog tags during the conflict.

Enter Connie, his nurse for a year, who decides to actually help him. She reaches out to Jack, who travels to California and instantly recognizes Tom from their time on the USS Yorker. The road back home is packed with adventure, miracles, constant prayer, and life-changing decisions. While the Navy eventually redeems itself in the end, they never do quite explain why they tried to hide him in the first place.

The real heart of the book lies in the growth of the characters. Smitty shows remarkable devotion to his new wife, standing in stark contrast to the angry man we first met on the ship. Meanwhile, Jack struggles with his own healing war injuries, yet his faith and determination to get Tom home are indomitable.

Obedience to the hard choices in life is deeply rewarded, especially when you walk the extra mile for someone else. Jack’s journey is a powerful reminder of that truth, mirroring the real-life grace that comes from stepping up when it matters most.
