Leaving Waverly by Sara R. Turnquist

This is the story of two injured souls. Henry is smothered at his home when he comes back from the war. Claire trys to help the newly freed slaves, but her mother and father continue to smother her freedom. Claire's heart of compassion goes against the former slave owner her father and she falls for Henry with his compassionate nature. This book has a surprise twist in the climax and is well worth reading.
