** spoiler alert ** Maybe it was the darkness of the novel or the fact that there is no happy ending. True love doesn't exist here, and the stepmother's love that the author tried to convey, only came out as a desperate woman trying to find a way to hide an impossible problem. All her problems go away by permanently locking Ella in another dimension. She even gets a third husband out it. I felt something was lost in the story telling.
