This has got to be the worst who-dun-it. It's a case of evil step-mother and evil step-sister. Nothing makes sense in this story until her suitor decides to investigate Mariah's illness. The action begins there and concludes with the supposedly stunning confession. I was not surprised at all. The murderers flee and are let go. If anything, the ending is horrible and justice is not served, and our couple live happily ever after in relative ignorance and joy.
