This story is a little surprising, but the makeup for this story has been done before. Clarisse is young and just learning the art of courting when she comes upon Gervaise who lives next door. He is kind and gentlemanly, but she has heard rumors of his betting. Her father asks an Earl, son of his friend, to court Clarisse. She finds him cool and aloof, but also gentlemanly. What Clarisse doesn't know is the games the nobility play to get what they want. The Earl takes advantage of Clarisse's naivety to get Gervaise out of the way. The twists this story takes will make you dizzy, but it is worth it in the end.
